These are my speaker notes, I know it rough but it'll do!!!
Hello, my name is Adam Shorthouse and I made a magazine.
Today I will be going through a few questions on how my
magazine came to be
This is my front page of my magazine
First of my style models, they
come in to categories , Q and NME are similar to mine in terms of content,. There target audience is a wider scale than
mine yet similar. They are the pinnacle
of music magazines in the UK, so codes and conventions start with them.
Also they have a history they are long running and they know what works!
Mojo is a magazine that runs a
different audience, but that audience is still rather niche. The music Mojo focuses on like classic rock for instance are
not majorly produced any more so fans are dying out or moving on. Mojo offers
an alternative perspective. The
contrasting themes also offer a unique perspective.
My magazine uses a lot of
conventions of this magazine Note, the slanted
text, black text backgrounds,
similar poses. Also the sticker, covered logo The colour use if you switch
white and black, the list goes on! I found that this magazine was highly representable as a indie music
magazine
I decided to change Q piece.
Having a face of an artist is a convention, I decided to go for an all body
shot for my artists as it suited their personalities I decided to move away
from font changes as I thought the background of my image might lead to it
being hard to read.
I developed on a few points in
this issue notably giving text block colour bacgrounds, as this added to the
pop out affect in my magazine. I also wanted to make this bigger, not blow it
up but text wise. The text was really small but I liked the sityle so I made it
bigger
Girls wanted to be represented
like actual girls . Research showed that indie girls are usually we dressed
plainly (research was google BTW) Pop stars seem to show a lot more skin.
People also wanted them to be. =I found that having more confident girls suited
the personality of the band.
For males I wanted a similar
approach, I needed ross to act likethe girls in Lunar parade, So to sem fitting
he mimics there personality. This is shown through he face (being confident)
and even mirrored in his clothing.
The band and target audience are
both young so representing youth as positive is a must. LP are represented as
being confident and successful, this is shown in images and text. Even the
other artists I made… Show that they are happy and full of life.
I did some research and I found
that markt force suited In-D very well. Firstly theey are UK based so outr
magazine could be hughly focused. This means deliveries won’t be delayed and we
could avoid high shipping cost. It deals with specialist, niche magazines like
one called VET, for vets. This means they understand each market for magazines.
For advertisement I woul focus on
these medias. Twitter and facebook are the 2 most overhauled websites.
Marketing on them would mean we hit the same audience of young people. This
kethord would also be free and easy to set up.
4 music and viva both focus on
the youth crowd. Both music channels are popular freeview channels and show
varied content everyday. People who watch will be interestd in music so it
seems like a grea market that isn’t very exploited yet by magazines.
These would be my ideal audience,
young, quirky and passionate about music!
To target my audience I used survey websites, specifically two SP and SM
these two website gave me multiple survey methods, Strawpoll allowed me to set
up a sing. SM allowed me to generate a professional survey. This survey I
posted on forums and to my indie friend. I got a plefera of resultsfor multiple
questions. I used online surveys for the accessability and the fact I could ask
different people.
This is how I changed my results
to suit my magazine.
PS was used I all my images to
edit them for the better. Here are all the tools I used
Here are two examples of
photoshop . My first is LPs main image.
Here is the space background and

Final draft
This is my final draft, They are big for your eyes only. I will be doing a comparison with my Preliminary and first draft in a mo' but for time being TAH DAH!
The ultimate comparison
Front page
This is my final draft of the completed magazine. First off I acquired a colour scheme (Hurray) Red, Black and white are the recurring colours, Blue is used on the name as a contrast. Previously the colours we over bearing and obnoxious, but now it seems more elegant and less... well... not elegant. Overall structure has stayed the same as it worked well! Hannah on the left has her newly Photoshop top that looks genuine (phew!). I also ditched the grey on the in-D logo :( but now it looks much better! blue on the bottom banner is now black making it look sweet!
"You can never go wrong with a little, black banner."
Compared to my preliminary, this has a lot more content. I have banners, stickers and lots of text, but my preliminary is only 2 images and little text. The colour scheme of my final draft is alot more eye friendly than what preliminary. (note blue and red is a no go). The image on my FD is also alot brighter and visible then my preliminary, making it seem alot more professional.
Contents
This is my FD for my contents page, As you can see it looks decent :)
First off, I stick with the colour scheme sticks as the red and black are used for text and white for background. The blue is used specially for dividers . I added a Feature section much like my style model Q which has a special area each issue, this contrasts with my regulars section. Images are in Polaroids now and look better with backgrounds.
I have made many changes to my first draft. First off the horrible colours left and i kept my new colour scheme. I then added backgrounds to my new images, I made space for one image, see previous section. I also added in so key features I was missing, like page numbers, subscribe section and presentability. I feel this document has a lot more order.
Compared with my preliminary this document takes the cake, The contents of this magazine is very ordered to which the preliminary was not. Images are a lot more constant than previously as they are the same shape and design. this document also has design (with graphology) which my preliminary did not.
Double page spread
I have again followed the colour schme leaving the page looking very fetching. The red manages to edge itself onto the text its self to separate it which I feel the document needed. The colour suits the band as it represents there riskay attitude and wild and crazy antics. It is very similar to the likes of Q which was my style model.
Compare to my first draft this is much more presentable. For starters, this doesn't look urine covered (that yellow was bad) I also scrapped the odd, to say the least, 'YE OLDE' drop capital. I also switched everything up so they wouldn't be cut off by the central fold. I also added in key features like page numbers, logo in corner and captions. The quote is now from the article which turns out is a direct code.
I did not do a preliminary for a DPS!
SPACE!
Hats off if you get the reference!
I and space in photoshop to use as a background to make my image seem cool! I am using it on my contents page. Take alook. Well it looks starry (not quite as good as my the model) but this is how I did it!
http://www.photoshoplady.com/tutorial/create-an-amazing-space-scene/802
Overall I am pleased with the outcome! it looks good on paper!
What have you done to your Lunar parade photos!?
Good question take a look!
I will reviel the est during my fianl project reveal which is soon!
How I did it
I selected the shirt using the lasso tool (so I wouldn't miss a pixel. I then added it to a new separate layer. I used the 'Ctrl + U' shortcut to bring up the hue, brightness and saturation bars I used the digits.
Hue: -60
Saturation: -36
Brightness: -15
This gave the shade I was looking for!
Any way I hope you liked it as it took me a long time!
Damn, I'm good! (all aboard the vain train)
So as you can see my lovely assistant Hannah has been altered. Her once Crayola red shirt has now been transformed into a nice maroon tinge. Hannah now looks like one of the band! It takes an hour to to each photo and I have done all three so that is 3 hours of work done for a great result!

1st draft!
This is my first draft of my IN-D magazine
Front page:
Front page:
The front page it the favourite page out of my 3. I find it looks like what it is supposed to be. First off you can see that I generated an image much like the one on my hand drawn design. My 3 models are Ella Reavly, Hannah Tompkins and Ross Whyatt. I decided to keep the grey logo as i liked to look of it. you can tell it is similar t the one on my hand drawn design. The lunar parade logo I decided to go for spacey purple and a nice blue I like the look of this logo. I also found a font of a font website called CLUB NEON that I got off of fonts 2 u. http://www.fonts2u.com/neonclubmusic-bold.font . I also stuck with my false image, must like off of my preliminary, last time i had a leaflet, this time a sticker. As you can see I made a sticker from tools in the in-design list. This incudeds he shadow tool and over 6 edit boxes! One issue is that i LOVE the image, ut Hannah on the left is looking abit bright, i will have to cut her from the final issue. Another issue is the colour scheme... I...don't...have one. I am going to wait until my feed back is complete before I settle on a grand design!.
What was I thinking? This is abysmal in my eyes. All I can say about this is the fact it does what is is supposed to do. However lets get in deep. The red is hideous and the black line dividers have to go! the images look alot like poloroids, which i think I am going to expand on . The text looks word arty so that's got to go. Also John mid right looks like a mug shot.
I am going to srap this and start from the top!
This needs tweaking, first of all i need to scrap the urine colour background, because you know... urine is off putting. Secondly I need to change the colours. I think i am going to do an all over colour make over... Second of all I need to drop the 16th century drop capital and use something closer to Lunar parade (edit: Just thought now I can use their font!) overall I think ill move the quote and shenanigans around.
Overall i feel i did pretty good, i am missing things like page numbers and title-ising but that is my next task.
